A land plane is a great tool for maintaining a gravel road or driveway, smoothing a horse arena, leveling a garden, and plenty of other uses you’ll think of.  It is the easiest implement to use for smoothing gravel driveways or roads because it runs against the ground on metal skid shoes you simply set it level against the ground and drive, it does the rest!
Two cutting blades set horizontally and at a parallel diagonal angle between two end plates attached to a steel frame. The cutting edges of the blades can skim along or cut into the ground’s surface and with included scarifiers for more aggressive churning of soil if you need to really repair a gravel drive or other eroded surface. Scarifier depth is adjustable to meet a variety of ground conditions. Adjustments are easy! Simply remove the steel pin, and raise or lower the scarifier to increase or decrease ground penetration.

Comparison of Box Blades vs. Land Planes

Box Blade:
Pros:
  • Versatile tool for digging, grading, and moving soil and gravel.
  • Has a back, can transfer material and release it as you go. This is helpful when spreading new gravel, spreading topsoil, or pulling material up a hill to fix a wash out.
  • Less expensive to purchase than a comparable size Land Plane.
Cons:
  • As it’s suspended from the three point hitch it is affected considerably when the tractor travels over a high spot or low spot (example: your front tire falls into a pothole as you are traveling, this will cause the box blade to raise up and release some material)
  • Requires constant monitoring and three point hitch height adjustments as you go to make sure you are not picking up or releasing too much material.
Land Plane:
Pros:
  • The easiest to use grading tool, just adjust it once and drive until you get the results you want.
  • As it runs on long skid shoes against the ground when the tractor travels over a high spot or low spot the land plane is not affected (example: your front tire falls into a pothole as you are traveling the land plane will not be affected)
  • Does not require constant monitoring or adjustment as you go as it does not accumulate material, gravel or soil flows up an over the cutter bars.
Cons:
  • Will not transfer material as it does not have a back, material is constantly released up an over the cutter bars as you go.
  • More expensive to purchase than a comparable size box blade.
